The Seasonal Changes of Major Nutrients and Rooting Potentials of Rhododendron Species
Yeam Do-Yi

Abstract
This study was carried out to elucidate the relationship between seasonal changes of rooting potential and changes of endogenous food materials according to growth stage in three deciduous rhocodendron and one semi-evergreen rhododendron, and then to find out proper time for rooting of cutting in these Rhododendron species.
The results are summarized as follows:
1. The shoot growth of these Rhododendron species showed determinated growth type which show only one gush of growth throughout annual growth cycle.
2. Dry weight of shoot increased in parallel with shoot maturity. Maximum was shown in early spring just prior to flowering, and then it decreased with time.
3. Nitrogen content was highest in the actively growing season. Nitrogen content decreased in parallel with shoot maturity and again increased at time just prior to leaf fall. In next spring nitrogen decreased again. Little changes was observed in nitrogen content in the shoots of K. yedoense.
4. In deciduous rhododendrons, total carbohydrate and starch increased with shoot maturity. They showed two peaks during leaf fall period and early spring prior to flowering. Starch content was minimum during actively growing season and winter. Highest level of sugar content was maintained during winter period. In R. yedoense which is semi-evergreen, starch did not accumulate for a long time after shoot growth ceased. Total sugar content was higher compared with deciduous rhododendrons and little change was observed throughout annual growth cycle.
5. High nitrogen level and low carbohydrate content during actively growing season coincided with high rooting potential. Higher rooting potential and longer profuse rooting period was observed in R. yedoense than in deciduous rhododendrons. It was concluded that opportune time for cutting in R. mucronulatum and R. japonicum was early or mid June, from June to September in R. yedoense, April in R. schlippenbachii.
